UPPCS Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services Examination 2026

Uttar Pradesh Provincial Civil Services (UP PCS) Exam officially known as Combined State / Upper Subordinate Services Examination is conducted by Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) every year to recruit candidates for Group A and Group B Civil Services across the state government. The selection process includes Prelims and Mains exam followed by a Personal Interview.

The UPPSC has a total of 500 vacancies for the UP PCS exam 2026. The total vacancies released in this is less than the previous year which is 920 (increased from 200 during the mains exam). The detailed post-wise vacancy distribution will be released separately.

There will be two exam for recruiting candidates for UP Civil Services through UP PCS exam which is Pre and Mains exam which will be conducted offline. The UPPSC PCS selection process includes 3 stages:

  1. Prelims (Objective/ MCQ)
  2. Mains (Written)
  3. Personality Test (Interview)
  4. Document Verification
  5. Final Merit

The UP PCS exam is a three stage exam. Candidates have to go through Prelims Exam, Mains Exam followed by an Interview.

  • Exam Mode: Offline.
  • Total Papers: 2 papers in different shifts.
  • Total Questions: 150 in Paper 1 (General Studies), and 100 in Paper 2 (General Studies II CSAT).
  • Total Marks: 200 in each paper.
  • Exam Duration: 2 hours each.
  • Marking Scheme: 1 mark will be deducted for every 4 wrong answers.
  • Exam Language: The exam will be bilingual (Both English and Hindi language).
  • Exam Nature: The paper 2 will be qualifying in nature but candidates need to appear in both papers.
  • Merit List: Merit list will be based only on the basis of Paper 2 to appear in the Mains exam.

The mains written exam consists of 8 papers. 6 papers are compulsory and 2 papers are optional. A total of 3 hours is alloted for each paper.

The personality test will be of 100 marks. The personality test will be about character, personality, general interest, general awareness, intelligence, academic interest, suitability for the service, some current topics and how would you handle them, and some general knowledge questions.

The final merit list will be based on the score in Mains exam and Interview.

What is UPPSC Prelims Exam Date 2026?

The prelims exam has been scheduled on 6th of December 2026.

Is UP PCS exam conducted online?

No, both prelims and mains exams are conducted offline.

What is the age limit for the UP PCS exam?

Candidates must be between 21 and 40 years old as of July 1 of the exam year. Upper age relaxations apply for reserved categories belonging to Uttar Pradesh (e.g., up to 5 years for SC/ST/OBC).

What is the minimum educational qualification required?

A Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university. Final-year students can apply, provided they possess their final mark sheet/degree by the time they fill out the Detailed Application Form (DAF) for the Mains stage.

Can candidates from other states apply for UP PCS?

Yes. Any Indian citizen can apply. However, out-of-state candidates are treated as General/Unreserved category candidates and cannot claim reservation benefits.

Are there any physical standard requirements for UP PCS Exam?

The physical requirement is required only for specific posts like Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Superintendent of Jail, and District Commandant Home Guards.

Is there negative marking in the UP PCS exam?

Yes, but the negative marking is only in the prelims exam of 1/3rd of every wrong answer.

What is the CSAT paper, and do its marks count?

The prelims CSAT (Paper 2) is qualifying in nature. Candidates need to score 33% marks to qualify this exam.
